MARIO MAZZA

MARIO MAZZA
(7 June 1882 - 22 November 1959).
He was an Italian educator. He was one of the founders in 1916 of ASCI, the Italian Catholic Scouting Association, which later became the Italian Catholic Scout Association.
Before the Scouting
In 1905 the school director Mario Mazza founded the Juventus Juvat association in Genoa, also known as the Gioiose. With the collaboration of don Capanera, it aims to offer the Genoese young people a healthy environment of growth and training, both professionally and spiritually.
Experience with Italian Explorers Boys
In 1910 he heard about the birth of the first Scout group in Italy, in Bagni di Lucca (Tuscany). Contact their founder, Sir Francis Vane, who advised him to get in touch with Sir James Spensley, an English doctor who had founded the first soccer team in Italy in Genoa and had a great deal of education for young people.
Mazza and Spensley invited Vane to Genoa for a conference on November 13, 1910. Following this conference, two days later, Mazza and Spensley formed the Genoese section of the Italian Explorers Boys (REI). President was appointed Count Ottavio Reghini, while Mazza was elected Secretary of the Section. Spensley became Commissioner Delegate for Liguria. The Gioiose converged in the REI.
Already at the end of 1911, however, there were contrasts between Mazza and Reghini. Mazza left the REI and reconstituted the Gioiose. Even Spensley left the REI with a group of explorers who, on some occasions, did later activities together with the Gioiose.
In 1912 Carlo Colombo founded the National Corps Young Italian Explorers (CNGEI) in Rome. Many of the REI groups converged in the new association, while Mario Mazza remained to await developments, and got a recognition from the Genoese ecclesiastical authorities, so as to transform the Gioiose into the RECI (Italian Catholic Explorers Boys). Despite the name, the association has never extended beyond Liguria.
Up to this point the Catholic Church had looked suspiciously at Scouting. But in the mid-decade the climate began to change, and the possibility of having some units of Catholic explorers on the English model within CNGEI was considered. However, the negotiations stalled, and in 1916 the ASCI (Italian Catholic Scouting Association) was founded thanks to the work of Count Mario di Carpegna. Four of the first six Departments were Genoese and came from the Gioiose.
In 1920 he took part in the first world jamboree in London and brought with him 15 Genoese explorers.
In 1927 the fascist regime dissolved the scout associations to bring all the boys into the Balilla. Mario Mazza attempted a mediation with the regime, and for a short time collaborated with the Balilla, trying in vain to change the spirit.
The post-war period
After the arrival of the Anglo-American troops in Rome, Mario Mazza committed to the rebirth of the ASCI with Monsignor Didier Nobels and Salvatore Salvatori.
At the same time, he also dedicated himself to the birth of adult Scautism in Italy, through the Compagnia dei Cavalieri di San Giorgio, composed of adult members of the ASCI.
In 1954, many companies converged in the MASCI (Italian Adult Scout Movement).
Mario Mazza died on 22 November 1959.
The MASCI named after him the Mario Mazza Scout Study and Documentation Center, located in Genoa.

SCOUTING

Pubblicato: Giovedì, 31 Gennaio 2019
Scouting is a worldwide youth movement, with the aim of educating young people and helping them in their physical, mental and spiritual development. It was founded in 1907 by Sir Robert Baden-Powell (BP). In 1910 officially began the Association of Girl Guides.
The method
Scouting is characterized by an educational method and a non-formal behavioral code, whose ultimate goal is to enable young people to become "good citizens". It is therefore based on a simple code of life values (the scout law and the Promise), on the principle of learning by doing, which outlines the personal growth of individuals through active and participated experience. In particular, Robert Baden-Powell schematizes in his writings this system in four fundamental points:
  • Character formation
  • Manual skill
  • Health and physical strength
  • Service to the next
Scouting in the world
In the world there are over 500 associations (national or regional) with more than 28 million scouts and 10 million guides.
Scouting in Italy
In Italy there are many associations belonging to the Scouting movement. Currently there are over twenty existing and operational. The two most widespread associations in the territory are the AGESCI (Association of Italian Catholic Guides and Scouts) and the AIGSEC-ESF (International Union of Guides and Scouts of Europe - Federation of European Scouting), both of which apply a free Catholic interpretation of the Scout method. We also count on CNGEI (Italian National Explorers and Explorers National Corps).
The MASCI

Moreover Italy has the MASCI that - since 1954 - gathers men and women who share the ideals of Scouting. The Movement is a founding member of ISGF (International Scout and Guide Fellowship). It is organized in communities - at local level - led by “Magisters”; there is also for every of 20 Italian regions a structure led by a regional secretary. Finally, at national level, the MASCI has a President, a Secretary and an ecclesiastical Assistant; it consists of a National Council (elected by the regional secretaries and the delegates of the communities every three years) and a Executive Committee. The Movement acts in several fields, in particular through voluntary service, in order to “leave a better world”.
The Centenary
2007 is an important year for Scouting, as it marked the 100th year since the creation of the movement. On 1 August 1907 the first scout camp began on Brownsea Island, led by Baden Powell. To celebrate the event on 1 August 2007 scouts from around the world participated in the dawn of the day, renewing their promise. In Italy the main event had place in the Circus Maximus, in Rome, where the most important representatives of scouting and Italian government were present.

The Masci (Italian Adult Catholic Scout Movement) "is an adult organization addressed to all men and women who share the ideals and principles of Scouting" (Article 1 of our Community Covenant).
We care lifelong learning in adults trough Scout method.
"We are men and women coming from different paths and experiences, united by the belief that scouting is a path of freedom for all the seasons of life and that happiness is in serving others." (from Masci Community Covenant).
The fellowship is organized into twenty regional branches for each of the Italian regions. Masci Lazio has 36 communities, for a total of 500 adult scouts. Our region is located in central Italy and hosts Rome, the splendid Capital full of history and art, the city of St. Peter's Basilica and the Colosseum. Latium includes four other fascinating “province” (departments): Frosinone, Latina, Viterbo and Rieti. In addition to a great artistic and cultural heritage, our region is rich of natural treasures: the long coast over the Tyrrhenian Sea, with the Pontine islands; wonderful lakes (e.g. Bracciano and Bolsena), magnificent walks can be made on the Cimini mountains or on the Terminillo.
Nearby the city of Rieti Masci holds a scout center, named “Base scout di Sala -Riccardo della Rocca”, in memory of a great figure of reference for our fellowship.
"This base has been, and will continue to be, a meeting place of fraternity, among those who are united by the same Law and Promise."(Sonia Mondin, President of Masci, Ceremony of dedication of the center, 18 June 2017).
We offer welcome and orientation services in our wonderful region to scout fellows who are visiting or wanting to take part in our initiatives.
Some activities by Masci Lazio:
On the first day of each year, Masci takes part in the march for Peace, on Via della Conciliazione in front of the Basilica of San Pietro; in February we realize many initiatives on the occasion of the Thinking Day; on 23rd April, Day of San Giorgio, we renew our Promise in a ceremony in San Giorgio al Velabro, in the center of Rome; in summer we organize work camps in the areas recently hit by the earthquake (Amatrice in particular); in Christmas time we care the diffusion of the Light of Peace, a flame that from Bethlehem is shared all over the world.
